This may\nspread during pregnancy, childbirth or breast-feeding, by sexual contact or\nblood, or from mother to kid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How does HIV become AIDS?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>HIV kills cells of CD4 T\u00e2\u20ac\u201d white blood\ncells that play a major role in helping your body fight disease. The smaller\nyou have CD4 T cells, the weaker your immune system will get.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will have an HIV infection, with\nfew or no symptoms, for years before it turns into AIDS. AIDS is diagnosed when\nthe number of CD4 T cells falls below 195 or when you have an AIDS-defining\ncondition, such as serious infection or cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_HIV_spreads\"><\/span><strong>How HIV spreads<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Infected blood, semen or vaginal\nsecretions have to touch the body to become infected with HIV. That can happen\nin several ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>By having sex:<\/strong> When you have vaginal, anal or oral\nsex with an infected person whose blood, semen or vaginal secretions will enter\ninto your body you may become infected. The virus may enter your body through\nmouth sores or tiny tears which sometimes develop during sexual activity in the\nrectum or vagina.<\/li><li><strong>By sharing needles:<\/strong> Sharing contaminated IV drug\nparaphernalia (needles and syringes) puts you at high risk of HIV and other\ninfectious diseases including hepatitis.<\/li><li><strong>From blood transfusions:<\/strong> The virus in some cases can be\nspread by blood transfusions. The blood supply of HIV antibodies is now\nscreened by American hospitals and blood banks, so this risk is very small.<\/li><li><strong>In pregnancy or delivery or through\nbreast-feeding<\/strong>:\nInfected mothers may pass the virus on to their children. During oral sex use a no\nlubricated, cut-open condom or a dental dam \u00e2\u20ac\u201d a piece of medical-grade latex.<\/li><li><strong>Tell your sexual partners if you have\nHIV:<\/strong> It&#8217;s important\nto tell all your current and past sexual partners that you&#8217;re HIV-positive.\nThey&#8217;ll need to be tested.<\/li><li><strong>Use a clean needle:<\/strong> If you use a needle to inject drugs,\nmake sure it&#8217;s sterile and don&#8217;t share it. Take advantage of needle-exchange\nprograms in your community. Consider seeking help for your drug use.<\/li><li><strong>If you&#8217;re pregnant<\/strong>, get medical care right away. If\nyou&#8217;re HIV-positive, you may pass the infection to your baby.
