It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a life-threatening condition that\ncauses fluid to develop in the brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such fluid\nraises the pressure inside the skull \u00e2\u20ac\u201d more commonly called intracranial\npressure (ICP). Increased ICP will reduce the flow of brain blood and reduce\nthe oxygen your brain gets. The brain needs an uninterrupted flow of oxygen to\nfunction properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Swelling is\nthe body\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s response to injury. It can sometimes be treated with medication and\nrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brain\nswelling can be very difficult to treat. It can also cause irreversible damage.\nThe swelling can occur throughout the brain or in certain areas. It may also be fatal if treated too late. If you begin to\nexperience side effects after a fall, accident, or while fighting off an\ninfection, visit a doctor immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Causes\"><\/span>Causes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cerebral\nedema-related ICP can have a number of different causes including:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Traumatic Brain\nInjury<\/strong>:\nA traumatic brain injury is acute trauma, such as from a fall or vehicle\naccident.<\/li><li><strong>Ischemic Stroke<\/strong>: An\nischemic stroke occurs when a blood clot is blocking the oxygen supply to the\nbrain. A lack of oxygen can damage cells in the brain and can cause swelling\nand pressure.<\/li><li><strong>Brain Tumour<\/strong>: A brain\ntumor can press against other areas of the brain or prevent fluid from leaving\nthe brain, causing elevated ICP.<\/li><li><strong>Infection<\/strong>: Bacterial\ninfections or virus infection may cause swelling in the brain. Encephalitis,\nfor instance, is an infection that induces inflammation in the brain, which can\nresult in elevated ICP develop.<\/li><li><strong>Brain Hemorrhage<\/strong>: A brain\nhemorrhage occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and leaks. This\ncauses inflammation and an increase in ICP.<\/li><li><strong>High Altitude<\/strong>: Cerebral\nedema can also occur above altitudes of around 4,000 meters.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Risk_factors\"><\/span>Risk factors<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cerebral\nedema is present with much common cerebral pathology and risk factors for the\ndevelopment of cerebral edema will depend on the cause. The following were\nreliable predictors for development of early cerebral edema in ischemic\nstrokes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Younger age<\/li><li>Higher severity of symptoms on the National Institutes of Health\nStroke Scale<\/li><li>Signs of current ischemia on clinical exam<\/li><li>Decreased level of consciousness<\/li><li>Hyper-dense sign of the artery and greater affected area on CT\nimaging<\/li><li>Higher blood glucose<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Complication\"><\/span>Complication<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Because\ncerebral edema can be due to serious diseases, failure to seek treatment can\nresult in serious complications and permanent damage. Once the underlying cause\nis diagnosed, it is important that you follow the treatment plan specifically\ndesigned for you by your health care professional to reduce the risk of\npotential complications including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cognitive impairment<\/li><li>Developmental delay<\/li><li>Learning disability<\/li><li>Loss or alteration of sensation<\/li><li>Muscle weakness<\/li><li>Paralysis<\/li><li>Personality changes<\/li><li>Physical disability<\/li><li>Unconsciousness and coma<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Prevent_Cerebral_Edema\"><\/span>How to Prevent Cerebral Edema<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Preventing\ncerebral edema involves taking measures to protect your head. Some options\ninclude:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Using a helmet during sports or physical activities to prevent\nunexpected brain injury<\/li><li>Controlling your blood pressure and cholesterol to prevent heart\ndisease and stroke<\/li><li>Wearing seat belts when travelling in a vehicle<\/li><li>Slowly ascending to high elevations to avoid HACE<\/li><li>Avoiding smoking to reduce the oxidative and inflammatory risk for\nstroke. <\/li><li>Monitoring your blood pressure and cholesterol to reduce your risk\nof a stroke.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is cerebral edema?
