Roosevelt declared it so, with Congressional support, the roots of\nthe holiday extend further. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be\ntraced back to 1621 when local Native Americans were welcomed to their harvest\ncelebrations by Pilgrims (settlers from England) in New England to celebrate\nthe harvest feast after a great season of progress. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turkey was\nnot on the menu, despite its pride of place at typical Thanksgiving dinners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pilgrims\nand their visitors would have enjoyed the chicken, the fish, the lobster, and\nthe deer instead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of\none the initial festivities lasted for three days and resulted in the harvest\ncelebrations in England at the time, but in modern England, these had much less\nimportance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a\nproclamation by President George Washington, it was first celebrated nationwide\non and off from 1789.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President\nThomas Jefferson did not celebrate it, and it wasn&#8217;t until President Abraham\nLincoln was in office after the American Civil War that it became a formal\nholiday in 1863. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However,\namid some debate, it was President Roosevelt who solidified the contemporary\ntimings and dates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Celebrate_Thanksgiving_Day\"><\/span>How to Celebrate Thanksgiving Day?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Often, the\nday is full of pomp and color. It is a wonderful time to exchange presents and\npost lovely Thanksgiving messages with your loved ones. Get a special\nThanksgiving meal of ham, potatoes, and a range of veggies if you want to impress\nyour family and friends. You will attend New York City&#8217;s Macy&#8217;s Thanksgiving\nParade and enjoy energetic performances if you wish to fly out of town.\nUsually, the parades mark the official Christmas shopping opening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>Thanksgiving Day<\/strong> parade is held in many\nmajor cities, the most popular of which is the Macy&#8217;s parade in New York City,\nan annual pageant of floats, cheerleaders, marching bands and giant helium\nballoons in the form of cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse and Felix the\nCat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A big part\nof Thanksgiving is performed by football (the American version). It is a\nlong-held Thanksgiving tradition to play and watch American football.\nPractically since the game&#8217;s invention, the National Football League has\ncompeted over the Thanksgiving holiday, and it&#8217;s one of the greatest days in\nthe football calendar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually,\nfamily members gather together, express thanks, and take part in a Thanksgiving\nmeal.
