Vitamin B12 test measures the levels of\nVitamin B12 in blood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vitamin B12\ndeficiency can be caused due to inadequate absorption of the vitamin from the\ndiet, pernicious anemia, post surgical treatment causing malabsorption and\ntaking diet deficient in Vitamin B12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The risk factors\nfor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?reload=9&amp;v=RGDGwoJ84-s\">Vitamin B12 deficiency<\/a> include decreased absorption in ileum which can be seen in\npatients with Crohn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s disease, resection of ileum and tapeworm infection. Also,\nin patients having decreased intrinsic factor, there is risk of Vitamin B12\ndeficiency which can be due to atrophic gastritis, pernicious anemia and\npostgastrectomy syndrome. Genetic factors such as deficiency of transcobalamin\ncan also be another risk factor. Persons who are older than 50 years, follow a\nvegetarian diet or are heavy drinkers fall in the category of risk of Vitamin\nB12 deficiency. Those who have been taking medications for a long time such as\nusing Histamine H2 blocker for 12 months, Metformin for more than four months\nand Proton pump inhibitor for more than 12 months also are under the risk\nfactor for Vitamin B12 deficiency. Factors such as smoking, drinking heavy\nalcohol or chronic (from a long time) alcoholism, pregnancy can also cause a\ndeficiency of Vitamin B12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RGDGwoJ84-s\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In case of\nVitamin B12 deficiency, the body starts to show signs and symptoms such as\nanemia, fatigue, weakness, sensations of pins and needles, difficulty in\nwalking, mouth ulcers, inflammation of tongue, shortness of breath, blurring of\nvision and frequent mood swings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important\nto treat Vitamin B12 deficiency as very low levels can cause neurological\nproblems and heart diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interpretation\nof Vitamin B12 blood test &#8211; The normal range of Vitamin B12 is 211 &#8211; 911 pg\/mL\nirrespective of sex and age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>High\nlevels of Vitamin B12 may be seen in kidney failure, diabetes, liver disease\netc.<\/li><li>Low\nlevels of Vitamin B12 may be seen in anemia, hyperthyroidism (high levels of\nthyroid), worm infection etc.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To treat Vitamin\nB12 deficiency, Vitamin B12 rich foods in the diet can be included such as\nfish, red meat, eggs, milk and milk products, legumes, nuts, seeds and soy\nproducts. The chances of Vitamin B12 are high in vegetarians as vegetarian\nfoods do not provide complete recovery from the Vitamin B12 deficiency. It can\nalso be taken in form of oral supplements.
