Breaking out (eruption) of the skin. A rash can be caused by an underlying medical condition, hormonal cycles, allergies, or contact with irritating substances. Treatment depends on the underlying cause of the rash. Medically, a rash is referred to as an exanthem.

A review of our Patient Comments indicated that many people with a rash have similar symptoms and signs. A few patients mentioned that their rashes initially oozed, then scabbed over, and bled easily. Others reported that their rashes seemed to appear when the seasons changed, when they ate certain foods, or when they began a new course of medication. Contact dermatitis. One of the most common causes of rashes - contact dermatitis - occurs when the skin has a reaction to something that it has touched.
Medications. Certain medications can cause rashes in some people; this may be a side effect or an allergic reaction.
